How to Choose an FPV Motor: A Complete Selection Guide
Choosing the right FPV motor is the single most impactful decision for your quad’s performance. This guide walks you through stator size, KV rating, propeller matching, and battery voltage so you can spec a motor with confidence.
Step 1: Match Stator Size to Frame Size
- 1106–1306 for 2–3 inch micro quads
- 2204–2207 for 4 inch ultralight builds
- 2305–2306 for 5 inch (the most common freestyle size)
- 2807–2810 for 6–7 inch long-range
- 3110+ for X-class and heavy-lift
Step 2: Understand KV Rating
KV is RPM per volt with no load. Higher KV = more RPM but less torque. Lower KV = more torque, suited to larger propellers and heavier loads. Moving from 4S to 6S means dropping KV by roughly one-third to keep the same RPM.
Step 3: Pair Propeller and Voltage
| Battery | 5 inch Prop | Recommended KV |
|---|---|---|
| 4S | 5×4.3 | 2400–2600KV |
| 6S | 5×4.3 | 1750–1900KV |
| 6S | 7×4.5 | 1300–1600KV |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does higher KV mean faster?
Not necessarily. Higher KV produces more RPM per volt, but if the propeller is too large the motor will overload and overheat. Total thrust depends on the correct KV-prop-battery combination.
What happens if I use too much prop?
An over-propped motor draws excess current, overheats, and can burn a winding. Match propeller load to the motor’s continuous current rating.
