Making the wrong motor choice can wreck your FPV drone build before it ever leaves the ground. Pick a motor with too low KV, and your quad flies like a school bus. Too high KV, and you melt batteries and ESCs in seconds.
After 15 years manufacturing brushless motors for the RC industry, the X-TEAM engineering team has seen every mistake in the book. This guide walks you through exactly what matters when choosing a brushless motor for your FPV drone — and how to get it right the first time.
The 4 Numbers That Define Every FPV Motor
1. Stator Size
Stator size is written as two digits like 2207 or 2306. First two digits = stator diameter in mm, last two digits = stator height. Wider = more torque; taller = more top-end power.
| Stator Size | Best For | Example Model |
|---|---|---|
| 1106 | Ultralight builds (<100g) | XTO-1106 |
| 1306 | Toothpick / micro quads | XTO-1306 |
| 2204 | 3-4 inch lightweight builds | XTO-2204 |
| 2306 | 5 inch freestyle / racing | XTO-2306 |
| 2807 | 7 inch long range / cinematic | XTO-2807 |
| 3115 | Heavy lift / 10 inch + | XTO-3115 |
2. KV Rating
KV tells you RPM per volt. A 2450KV motor on 4S (14.8V) spins at roughly 36,000 RPM at full throttle.
| Build Type | Battery | Recommended KV | Motor Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5″ Freestyle | 4S | 2400-2750KV | 2207 / 2306 |
| 5″ Freestyle | 6S | 1700-1950KV | 2207 / 2306 |
| 7″ Long Range | 6S | 1300-1600KV | 2806.5 / 2807 |
| 10″ Heavy Lift | 6S | 800-1100KV | 3115 |
3. Weight
For every gram you add to the motor, you need approximately 2 extra grams of thrust. The XTO-2306 weighs just 33g but delivers 1,372g of thrust — a thrust-to-weight ratio over 40:1.
4. Max Current Draw
Your motor’s max current draw must stay below your ESC rating. If your motor pulls 43.5A at full throttle, you need at least a 50A ESC — ideally 55-60A for safety margin.
FAQ
Q: Can I run a 2306 motor on a 3-inch drone?
A: Technically yes, but you’d be wasting weight. A 3-inch build needs 1306-1507 motors.
Q: What’s the difference between 4S and 6S motor selection?
A: For the same prop size, 6S needs lower KV (roughly 2/3 of 4S KV).
Q: Can X-TEAM customize KV values?
A: Yes. All XTO-series motors support custom KV winding. Contact us with your target KV, battery voltage, and prop size.
